The Guides

Melodie Suchy-Tancon

Melodie started Denman Hornby Canoes and Kayaks Ltd. in 2003.  She is both a certified kayak guide and canoe instructor.  While going to Simon Fraser University, she worked in outdoor education with children at Strathcona Park Lodge where she met her husband Mario.  They have three children; Chelsea, Nick and Marco.  She has taught a variety of ages from grade 3 to 12 and enjoys working with seniors.  One of her passions is showing guests our amazing islands.

Mario Tancon

Super Mario grew up on the coast in nearby Campbell River, where he worked on and around boats of all types.  He has extensive local environmental knowledge to share.  He is inspired by the fresh local produce and farms on our islands, and uses these to inspire his delicious meals.

Chelsea Tancon

Chelsea has guided for the past two seasons, when she is not training for elite level volleyball.  She attends university in Langley, and is studying human kinetics.  Her team won Canadian University Nationals this past season.   She learned to hand roll a kayak at age 12 at Strathcona Lodge where her grandfather started the first outdoor education training program there.  Chelsea’s stories of the islands from childhood, combined with her science background makes for interesting paddling conversations. She attended Denman Island Community School and enjoys working with people of all ages.

Nick Tancon

Nick manages to tuck his 6’7” frame into our kayaks and assists when he is not away training for University basketball.  You may have  seen him renting out paddle boards and kayaks at Whaling Station Bay on Hornby in August.  He’s happy to give you paddle board tips or accompany you on our trips.

Marco Tancon

Marco makes sure all the gear is rinsed with fresh water. He will set you up with rental gear as long as you have taken some kayak training in safety and paddling techniques. He can give you tips for the SUP boards too.
